I rarely get shots like these with the horses running at me. 95% of the time, the horses will either be running away or perpendicular. You have to be between them and something they are after to get head-on shots. In this case, it was the water hole.
It was this past August, right after the round-up. They had just released the horses that had been rounded up that they had planned to turn loose. I wanted to see which ones they turned loose and how they were doing. I usually park in the same spot, and it's next to a water hole as you first enter the range. There happened to be a couple of horses milling around. I got a few shots of them then started to pack my side by side for the rest of the day. I was just about ready to take off when I could begin to hear the rumbling. It didn't dawn on me what it was for a few more seconds, and then it hit me! I spun around, and here came the whole herd running for the water hole! I franticly grabbed my camera and just started firing away, just hoping that I could get some keepers for not being prepared for what was happening.
That was a lot of fun and an experience I'll never forget!
