“When everything goes to hell, the people who stand by you without flinching -- they are your family.” ~Jim Butcher
I took this in the springtime of 2020. Spring is always a great time to be with the wild horses. Lots of new babies to see and photograph. I don't think this baby was more than a few days old and they don't get very far from their mothers most of the time. The baby would either hide behind the mare. Or the mare would get between the baby and me whenever I would try and get an image of it. It was such a dry spring, and the wind was blasting dust everywhere, creating a hazy, blown-out background. But I liked the contrast between the background and the mare and baby, and I wanted an image of them both together. So I patiently waited, and waited, until the right moment to line up when they would be together, and I could see both of their faces. Finally, for a split second, it happened. Even though the foal was turned away, I caught just enough of a glimpse of its eye to make the image work.
