I'm not the biggest fan of photographing in the wintertime. I don't like the cold at all. But cabin fever sets in after being stuck in the house for so long during those long winter nights. I have to get out. The roads can be dicey when active stormy winters are out on the range. But I took a chance anyway and ventured out. And some of the roads were bad! It was all my four-wheel drive side-by-side could do to get through them. After a couple of hours driving around the range looking for horses, I finally spotted them on top of a mountain off the main road. It was a good half-mile or more hike to the top. I grabbed everything I could fit in my backpack and reluctantly headed up the mountain. I can't count anymore how many times I've wanted to talk myself out of something because it would be hard. But reaped the rewards for suffering through the misery. I didn't want to go to the range and freeze that day, and I didn't want to hike up that mountain, but if I hadn't, I never would have gotten this picture. I will appreciate what it took to get this image as long as I live.
I love the soft focus, snow-covered mountains in background with the contrast and rich tones of the horses. This would be a great fit in a horse-lover mountain home.
